The CDC announced that Sanofi Pasteur is voluntarily recalling 800,000 doses of their H1N1 vaccine, for children between 6 and 35 months.
“I need to be clear with everyone, this is not a safety recall,” stressed Tennessee Health Commissioner, Susan Cooper, in a news conference.
Cooper says, “The recall is really about the strength, or the potency of the vaccine.”
The recall does not affect any of the vaccine for adults or products from other manufacturers.
According to the CDC, “There are no safety concerns with these lots of H1N1 vaccine. All lots successfully passed prerelease testing for purity, potency, and safety.”
The strength of vaccines can sometimes decline with time, the agency said in a statement on its Web site.
H1N1 vaccines are being recalled. It involves one company, and about 800,000 doses nationwide. The Big Ten adds either Pittsburgh or Syracuse; the Big East, upon losing one of its most important members, reaches out of its geographic realm to add TCU and assure its continued BCS viability (it already has DePaul and Marquette for basketball, so another team from the Central time zone wouldn’t hurt), and the Pac-10 still adds Boise State and Utah.
In either scenario, the BCS conferences could suck up three of its most consistent infiltrators -- Boise State, TCU and Utah -- and quell some of the discussion about why those teams never play for national championships, even with undefeated records.
The Big Ten has several potential candidates that would make geographic sense for membership.
The Afternoon Underdogs on 790AM today were also entertaining a thought of what Kentucky would look like in the Big Ten. They made the argument that it would be good for UK because they'd become the most southern school in the conference instead of the most northern as they are in the SEC which would be a recruiting advantage, they would get to play in a better basketball conference, and the football team would have a greater chance of making it to a BCS bowl game.

787 first flight landing
The 787 is a radical departure in aircraft design. Where other passenger jets are made mostly from aluminum and titanium, about half of the 787 is made of lightweight composite materials such as carbon fiber.
Those materials have long been used on individual parts such as rudders, and on military planes, but the 787 is the most ambitious use of the technology aboard a passenger plane.
Boeing says the aircraft will be quieter, produce lower emissions and use 20 percent less fuel than comparable planes, while giving passengers a more comfortable cabin with better air quality and larger windows.
A large number of people had gathered to have a look at the takeoff and landing of Boeing 787. The two members crew of the plane performed a number of checks during the three hour trip that including the testing of various landing gears and flaps.
The 787 should take its first flight on Tuesday, Boeing Co. officials said. The are some tests to be completed this weekend and the weather needs to be acceptable, they added. The first flight for the 787 will be two years later than planned. The new jet, the first to be made with a majority of composite materials, is set to take off about 10 a.m. from Everett’s Paine Field. It’s expected to fly for about five hours before landing at Boeing Field in Seattle. There are some 840 Dreamliners on order, with the first scheduled for delivery late next year.
United buys 787s: United Airlines gave Boeing a big order for 787s, buying 25 of the jets valued at about $4 billion. It’s one of the few new orders Boeing has received this year. The airline also ordered 25 A350 XWBs, the first time it has ordered twin-aisle jets from Airbus. The company hasn’t placed an order for new aircraft since 1998. It expects to take delivery of the new jets between 2016 and 2019.

the City Bakery Croissant sandwich
City Bakery is sweet, savory and in-between.Vegans and vegetarians: No longer is it necessary to resort to meat substitutes. The smoked tofu in Birdbath Bakery's smoked tofu sandwich is every bit as good as the best smoked bacon. I know, because I also eat bacon.
The sandwich is indeed vegan. I called Maury Rubin at the City Bakery (who was busy working on the new Birdbath location in Soho, in the old Vesuvio's space at 160 Prince Street), and he said the sauce is made from pureed edamame, and the smoked sandwich filling is tofu, not tempeh. It and the sauce are made from beans sustainably grown at a Vermont farm, living up to Birdbath's "green" ethic.

on October 24th, Shiloh passed away in Maine Medical Center after two weeks of fighting pneumonia.
Doctors had predicted she would only survive only for days after her birth at the most, but the girl, described by her mother as "a tough little thing," died at Maine Medical Center on Friday afternoon, hospital spokesman John Lamb said. She had been hospitalized in critical condition for nearly a week.
Being born with "mermaid syndrome," also known as sirenomelia, meant that the Kennebunkport girl had only one partially working kidney, no lower colon or genital organs and legs fused from the waist down.
Shiloh was a fifth-grader at Kennebunkport Consolidated School. "She was such a shining personality in that building," said Maureen King, chairwoman of the board of the regional school district.
